This two-day journey takes you from Dushanbe to the mountain town of Qalai Khumb, the gateway to the Pamirs. Traveling along the Panj River, you’ll pass dramatic landscapes, ancient fortresses, and remote mountain villages, with Afghanistan visible just across the river.
The highlight of the trip is the Afghan border market, a unique cultural experience where local traders from both sides gather between the mountains to exchange goods, stories, and traditions. This is one of the rare opportunities to witness Afghan life up close without crossing the border.
Along the way, you’ll visit the Nurek Reservoir, one of the largest in Central Asia, explore the ruins of Hulbuk Fortress, and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of Qalai Khumb, surrounded by soaring peaks and the flowing Panj.
Day 01: Driving to Qalai Khumb (350 km, ~7 hours)
8:30 AM – Pick-up from your hotel in Dushanbe.
After about one hour of driving, we stop for photos at the Nurek Lake viewpoint, where you'll also find a small local market selling a variety of local nuts.
After another 1.5 hours, we arrive at the Hulbuk Fortress for a short visit and exploration of this historic site.
13:00 – Lunch at a local café in Kulob.
After lunch, we cross the Shurabad Pass, where you'll catch your first glimpse of Afghanistan. For the next 100 km, we drive along the Panj River, with stunning views of Afghan villages across the water—visible from the car windows as the road hugs the riverbank.
We arrive in Qalai Khumb around 6:00 PM, check into a cozy guesthouse, and enjoy a short walk (approx. 1 hour) before dinner to stretch our legs and take in the fresh mountain air.
Dinner can be enjoyed either at a restaurant near the guesthouse, or at the guesthouse itself, where they serve delicious home-cooked meals—usually including two courses, fresh fruits, tea, and more.
After breakfast at our guesthouse by the Khingov River, we head to the Afghan border market—a rare and vibrant gathering where locals from both Tajikistan and Afghanistan come together to trade goods.
Here, you’ll have the chance to meet and chat with vendors from both sides of the border, offering traditional items such as handmade hats, clothing, food, and local crafts. It’s a fascinating cultural exchange set against the backdrop of the towering Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains.
After exploring the market, we return to Qalai Khumb for lunch at a local café, and then begin our drive back to Dushanbe, retracing our scenic route along the Panj River.
We expect to arrive in Dushanbe by the evening.
