Dushanbe to Osh Pamir Highway Tour: FAQs & Travel Tips.

The Dushanbe to Osh Pamir Highway Tour is one of the most spectacular road trips in the world, taking you through breathtaking landscapes, high mountain passes, and remote villages. Many travelers have common questions about this journey, so we’ve compiled this guide to help you prepare. Here are the most frequently asked questions and useful tips for your adventure.

1. Pick up/drop off time and location

1.1. Pick up/drop location

We will pick you up from your accommodation in Dushanbe and drop you off to your accommodation in Osh. Therefore, please send your location (name and GPS location) a day before, so we should know where we should pick you up.

1.2. Pick up time

The pick up time on the day 01 will be at 9:00 am, but can slightly differs since we pick you up from different locations.

1.3. Drop-off time

We arrive in Osh before 4:00 PM, so if you plan to book a flight from Osh to Bishkek on the same day, it should be possible.

2. What is the best time to do the Pamir Highway tour?

The best months to travel are June to September, when the roads are clear, and the weather is mild. Traveling in early spring or late autumn may bring unpredictable weather, while winter conditions make the route difficult due to snow.

3. What type of vehicle is used for the tour?

Since the Pamir Highway includes rough and unpaved roads, 4x4 vehicles (such as Toyota Land Cruisers) are used to ensure a safe and comfortable journey.

4. Is a Tour Guide Necessary?

We provide local drivers who are knowledgeable about the best places to visit, where to stay, and where to find great food. However, they do not serve as tour guides. For a richer experience, we recommend hiring an English-speaking tour guide. A guide can offer valuable cultural insights and help with local connections, enhancing your overall experience.

5. What kind of accommodation should I expect?

Most nights are spent in guesthouses, and homestays. Hotels are available in Dushanbe, Khorog, Qalai Khumb and Murghab. In rural areas, expect basic facilities with shared bathrooms and limited electricity. The experience is authentic, offering a great opportunity to connect with locals.

In Karakul, Jizeu and Bulunkul villages, there are not electricity, no shower, no internet and toilet is also outside. Therefore, you should be ready for that.

5.1. Do I need to arrange my accommodation, or will the company take care of it?

We handle the booking of guesthouse accommodations for the 6 nights during the trip. If you prefer to stay in a hotel, please let us know so we can check availability. Since accommodation is not included in the tour price, payment will be made directly to the hosts.

For accommodations before the tour in Dushanbe and after the tour in Osh, you will need to arrange and pay for them yourself.

6. What should I pack for the trip?

  • Power bank and USB cables for charging your devices, plus extra batteries.

  • Torch: Useful for visiting outdoor toilets at some places.

  • Small towel: Handy for drying your face.

  • Comfortable trekking shoes: Ideal for the Jizeu trek (2.5 hours one way, 8 km).

  • Sun protection: Sunscreen (SPF) to protect against strong sun exposure.

  • Hat and sunglasses: Essential for the sunny and hot weather.

  • Insect repellent: To protect against mosquitoes, if present.

  • Medications:

    • Diarrhea medicine: Common for many travelers due to food and water changes. You might want to bring something to prevent it.

    • Headache medicine: Mild headaches can occur at high altitudes (above 3000m), so it’s a good idea to have something to manage this, though it’s usually not severe.

  • Warm clothes: Even in summer, nights can be cold, so bring layers for warmth.

  • Cash in small denominations: For food, accommodation, and entrance fees. You should bring cash and exchange it to Tajik Somoni in Dushanbe before the trip, as payment is made in TJS. It is better to withdraw or exchange in Dushanbe, as ATMs are scarce in remote areas, and in places where they exist, they may sometimes not have cash.

  • Personal medications & first aid kit: Be sure to bring anything you might need for personal health needs.

  • Passport with the necessary visas: Essential for border crossings and travel permits. If you need a visa to enter Kyrgyzstan, you should make sure that you have the visa before getting to the border.

  • Reusable water bottle: Stay hydrated throughout the trip.

7. Is altitude sickness a concern?

Yes, the route reaches altitudes over 4,600 meters, and some travelers may experience mild altitude sickness. It’s recommended to acclimatize gradually, stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol during the first days.

8. How much does the tour cost?

The cost varies depending on the group size. Please check the price list section of the Dushanbe to Osh Pamir HIghway Tour.

9. Can I join a group to share costs?

Yes! Many travelers look for others to share the ride and reduce costs. Check our departure list or contact us to find travel companions.

10. What are the highlights of the Pamir Highway tour?

  • Wakhan Valley – Panoramic views and ancient fortresses

  • Bulunkul & Yashilkul Lakes – Stunning alpine lakes

  • Ak-Baital Pass (4,655m) – The highest point on the route

  • Murghab – A remote town in the heart of the Pamirs

  • Local Culture – Meet Pamiri people and experience their hospitality

  • Jizeu hiking - Hiking in a remote untouched village of Jizeu in Bartang valley.

11. How to Prepare for the Jizeu Hiking?

The driver will drop you off at the starting point of the trek, which is the Jizeu bridge over the Bartang River. Leave your luggage in the car and take only essential items like your camera, water, and any necessary gear. Cross the bridge and begin the 2.5 to 3-hour trek to Jizeu village.

Make sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes, though regular shoes should also suffice. In Jizeu village, you'll stay overnight at a homestay, where dinner, bed, and breakfast will be provided by the local hosts.

On the following day, return to the bridge, where your driver will be waiting to pick you up.
