Early Season 6-Day Pamir Highway Tour (Modified Itinerary)

At Discover The Pamirs, we offer a modified version of our classic 7-day Pamir Highway tour (Dushanbe–Osh and Osh–Dushanbe) during the early season.

There are two main reasons for this adjustment:

  • Seasonal conditions in Jizeu (Bartang Valley): Access to Jizeu village can sometimes be affected by stonefall, and local homestays may not yet be fully prepared to receive guests.
  • Lower pricing: By shortening the itinerary, we are able to reduce costs. In addition, we provide extra early-season discounts, making this option even more budget-friendly.

What Does the 6-Day Itinerary Look Like?

Below is the shortened itinerary of the Pamir Highway tour from Dushanbe to Osh via the Wakhan Corridor.
(The reverse route follows the same destinations.)

Day 1: Dushanbe → Kalai Khumb (350 km)

Depart early from Dushanbe and drive toward Kalai Khumb along the scenic Panj River.
Stop at Nurek Dam and Hulbuk Fortress, then continue via Kulob.

Cross the Shurobod Pass, where you’ll enjoy panoramic views toward Afghanistan.
Arrival in Kalai Khumb for overnight stay.

Day 2: Kalai Khumb → Khorog (240 km)

Drive to Khorog, the administrative center of the GBAO region.

After lunch, explore:

  • Botanical Garden
  • Central Park
  • Local bazaar

Overnight in a guesthouse.

Day 3: Wakhan Valley Exploration (210 km)

Travel through the stunning Wakhan Valley along the Afghan border.

Highlights include:

  • Garm-Chashma hot springs
  • Ishkashim village
  • Yamchun & Qahqaha fortresses
  • Bibi Fatima hot springs

Overnight in a guesthouse in the Wakhan Valley.

Day 4: Wakhan Valley → Bulunkul (170 km)

Visit:

  • Sufi Muborak-Kadami Vakhani Museum
  • Vrang Buddhist stupa
  • Langar petroglyphs

Continue to Bulunkul village, known as one of the coldest inhabited places in the region.
Overnight in a local guesthouse.

Day 5: Bulunkul → Karakul (280 km)

Visit Yashilkul Lake before rejoining the Pamir Highway.

Stop in Murghab for lunch, then cross the Ak-Baital Pass (4655 m) — the highest point of the Pamir Highway.

Arrive at Karakul village for overnight stay near the lake.

Day 6: Karakul → Osh (286 km)

Drive toward the Kyrgyz border and cross into Kyrgyzstan.

Stop in Sary-Tash for lunch, then continue to Osh.
Arrival at your hotel marks the end of the tour.

Can Jizeu Be Added Back?

Short answer: yes.

According to recent updates from local residents, access to Jizeu is currently open due to low snowfall this year. However, conditions can still change depending on weather. If it rains, there will be stonefalls.

Option 1: Add Jizeu with Overnight (7 Days)

  • Full 7-day itinerary with Jizeu trek and homestay
  • Price: $614 $499 per person (based on 4 travelers)

Pricing rules:

  • Fixed departures → always $499 per person
  • Flexible departures → calculated as:
    $499 × 4 ÷ number of travelers

Example:
3 travelers → $499 × 4 ÷ 3 = $665 per person

Option 2: Add Jizeu Without Overnight (6 Days)

  • Visit Jizeu, have lunch, return to the road, continue to Khorog
  • No extra day added (still 6 days)
  • Slightly rushed, but all highlights are included

Price:

  • Fixed departures → $470 per person
  • Flexible departures →
    $470 × 4 ÷ number of travelers

How to Decide?

The best option depends on the group.

Some travelers may:

  • Have flights from Osh on Day 7
  • Already have other tours planned

If not all group members agree to extend the trip, the standard 6-day itinerary remains the best choice.

FAQ for the early season tour

Q1: What clothes should we bring?

A: This is one of the most important questions, as temperatures vary significantly along the route due to altitude differences (from ~800 m to over 4000 m).

We recommend checking the weather in these key locations:

  • Dushanbe (warmest)
  • Khorog (moderate)
  • Murghab / Bulunkul (coldest)

Example (April 2026):

  • Murghab / Bulunkul: +4°C daytime, down to –15°C at night
  • Khorog: around +20°C daytime, +5°C at night;
  • Dushanbe: around +25°C daytime, +15°C at night.

What to pack

  • Warm jacket (essential)
  • Layers (thermal base layers recommended)
  • Waterproof jacket or rain protection (spring is often wet)
  • Hat, gloves, and warm socks
  • Hiking shoes (if you want to include the Jizeu hike). Apart from Jizeu hike, we have smaller hikes to petroglyph in Langar, where you can use it.

Extra tips

Tip 1:
Even though homestays use stoves for heating, rooms can get cold at night—especially after midnight.

Tip 2:
A light sleeping bag is highly recommended, particularly for the Eastern Pamir (Murghab, Bulunkul).

In warmer areas like Jizeu, Khorog, and the Wakhan Valley, it may not be necessary.

If you prefer not to bring one, you can usually request extra blankets from your hosts—this is easier during the early season when there are fewer travelers.

Q2: Is there a specific meeting point, or will I be picked up from my accommodation?

A: In most cases, we pick travelers up directly from their accommodation.

However, depending on the group size and logistics, we may ask you to come to a nearby guesthouse or meeting point. If so, we will inform you the evening before departure.

Please make sure to:

  • Stay at your accommodation in the morning, as internet access may be limited outside
  • Share your accommodation details with us in advance (if you haven’t already)

On the day of departure, we will contact you via WhatsApp when we arrive for pickup.

See you soon in Dushanbe! ;)
